Background of the Study

Genetically modified (GM) foods have become increasingly prevalent in many parts of the world due to their potential to enhance food security and improve agricultural productivity. However, there remains significant public concern regarding the safety and health implications of GM foods, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. In Yobe State, as in many other regions, there is a growing debate over the introduction and consumption of GM foods, especially given the lack of adequate public education on the subject (Aliyu et al., 2024).

The benefits and risks of GM foods are still widely debated, with some proponents arguing that GM crops can help address issues such as food scarcity and malnutrition, while opponents raise concerns about potential health risks, environmental harm, and the monopolization of seed markets by large multinational corporations. Public awareness and understanding of GM foods are crucial for informed consumer decision-making. However, in Yobe State, little is known about how well the general population understands the implications of consuming GM foods. This study aims to assess public awareness of genetically modified foods in Yobe State and explore the associated health concerns.

Statement of the Problem

The adoption of genetically modified foods in Nigeria has been gradual, and public understanding of their potential health impacts is often insufficient. Yobe State, with its predominantly rural population and limited access to health education resources, may have low levels of awareness about GM foods and their possible health risks. Without adequate knowledge, consumers may unknowingly consume GM foods that could have negative health effects, including allergenic reactions or long-term chronic illnesses. This study seeks to investigate the public’s awareness of genetically modified foods and assess the health implications in Yobe State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of public awareness of genetically modified foods in Yobe State.

2. To identify the perceived health risks and benefits of GM foods among the residents of Yobe State.

3. To provide recommendations for improving public education and awareness regarding GM foods and their health implications.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of awareness of genetically modified foods among residents of Yobe State?

2. What health risks and benefits do people in Yobe State associate with GM foods?

3. How can public awareness and education on GM foods be improved in Yobe State?

Research Hypotheses

1. The level of public awareness of genetically modified foods in Yobe State is low.

2. Residents of Yobe State perceive significant health risks associated with the consumption of genetically modified foods.

3. Public education and awareness campaigns can increase understanding and improve perceptions of genetically modified foods in Yobe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the public awareness of genetically modified foods in Yobe State, including their perceived health risks and benefits. The research will primarily target rural and urban populations in various local government areas of the state. Limitations may include challenges in gathering reliable data from communities with limited access to information and the difficulty in evaluating the actual consumption patterns of GM foods.

Definition of Terms

• Genetically Modified Foods (GM Foods): Foods derived from organisms whose genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating or natural recombination.

• Public Awareness: The general level of understanding and knowledge that the population has about a particular issue.

• Health Implications: The potential effects on health that result from consuming GM foods, including both positive and negative impacts.
